Marion County, Florida Deed Records

Abstracts from the first three volumes of Marion County, Florida deeds covering the years 1843 to 1848 are now available.  The importance of these records to the genealogist cannot be over estimated.  They spell out relationships and may show chain of title.  Division of estates, deeds of gifts, wills, marriage contracts and powers of attorney are found in many of these deeds.

The county of Marion was one of the earliest counties in the state and was created on March 25, 1844 from portions of Alachua, Mosquito (now Orange), and Hillsborough Counties.  It was almost twice its present size, including part of present Lake County and part of Sumter County.  With only slight changes in the southern boundary in 1853, the original area of Marion County remains,  It contains 1,039,360 acres.

Included in the early deeds are many Spanish land grants.  After the Spanish lost control of Florida in 1821, speculators bought up large tracts of land, some of which were sold at auction when mortgages were foreclosed.  The early records also contain deeds made to settlers who came into the area and made application for property under the Armed Occupation Act of 1842, whereby the government offered land to those willing to establish and defend homes on the frontier.

An extensive index shows names of person, slaves, places of origin and businesses.  A map of early Marion County indicating the location of the Spanish grants has been added to aid the researchers.

Soft cover, 8 ½  x 11, 120 pages, fully indexed.

$25.00  including postage and handling.  Allow 2 weeks for delivery.
